Sliced

Did you all hear about Moda Bakeshop’s Sliced Competition? I stumbled upon it a week or so ago and my eyes grew huge at the picture of the grand prize…new sewing machine, iron, fabrics, batting, etc! I hopped over to the flickr group to see the entries so far and there was only a few. And that inspired me enough to give it a whirl.

I’ve actually never entered a competition. I was trying to think back and I feel like waiting to find out scholarship information when applying to college was the last time I was in a “competition” (didn’t win those lol…at least not the full ride ones). So entering a competition is a bit (read A LOT) nerve wrecking for me. But I’m proud of what I made, so I wanted to share them before anyone has found out who gets into the competition. That way my opinion isn’t colored by the contestants. 😉

I made two entries. I was going to do a third but decided the insanity must stop and I needed to give myself a break. There were certain requirements for the “audition”. Being sponsored by Moda Bakeshop, as you can imagine a precut was required…so charms, fat quarters, jelly rolls, etc. All fabric had to be Moda (makes sense) and we had to use batting somewhere and a belt buckle somehow (that could be decorative or functional). Oh and we had to make an item for an office.

Phew! That’s a lot to think about.

I knew immediately what I needed for my soon to be new sewing room/office. So I set out to make that. Something to help me organize!

Sliced

I call this wall organizer New, WIP, Phew. As in, new projects, works in progress and completed (phew!) projects. I’m always stashing my directions all over the place and then I can’t find them. This will help me attempt to keep that tidy.

Sliced

I used the belt buckles decoratively as the label holders which I hand stamped (my new love!). I used a charm pack of Domestic Bliss by Liz Scott, Moda Marine Bella Solid and some Sunkissed by Sweetwater for the binding. I used plastic crochet sheets to help give the holders support and made gusseted sides for ease of use. Topped the whole thing with grommets (you know I love a good grommet) to make it easy to hang.

Sliced

I happened to have the perfect ribbon (I won’t lie, I have a lot of ribbon!) that I used both decoratively and functionally to hold the pockets in place. And I carefully marked off the bella solid with tailors chalk in straight lines for a pretty cross hatch quilting design.

Sliced

I was excited when I searched through my stash for another Moda fabric to match and found the Sunkissed fabric matched PERFECTLY. I love their text prints and this made me very happy to use this! In fact all of this fabric was in my stash! Woohoo! Me being me, I hand sewed that binding in place quite happily while watching tv one afternoon.

Sliced

hmm…I think has gotten a bit long already, so I’ll save my second entry for another post. I have lots to say about that one too and I don’t want you to think I’m long winded. Oh well, you probably already think that. I’ve always been this way. lol

One last shot for the road! Wish me luck!!

  1. Wow!!! What a beautiful job you did on your organizer. Good luck Angela – I'm sure your entry will be a judges fav. Love that cross-hatch diamond quilting and the ribbon detail.

  2. You don't need any luck. This is honestly one of the best entries. And now I kinda want to make one for myself! I will be very shocked if you don't make the audition round! But, good luck , anyway!

  3. You Are Amazing! I have fought with myself several times about entering and finally realized that I have too many WIPs already and didn't need any more "self-imposed" stress. I was going to make the same thing. How funny is that. Yours is abosulutey beautiful and fantastic. I am glad I didn't enter…lol.

  4. I will wish you luck but I think it will be your talent and skill which will see this as a winner!! It's absolutely wonderful! Love the cross hatching, the ribbons and the pretty colours! Again- good luck, you deserve to win!!!!!

  5. Wow, this is so awesome! I want one! Even if you don't win, you should write a pattern for it. I would totally buy it, and then put it in my disappearing pile of patterns that I really want to make some day but can never find! 🙂

  6. Great idea! I saw it ages ago, and flaked immediately because I couldn't think of where to get a buckle (plus I had a million and one other things on, it was a handy reason to talk myself out of it!)

  7. When I entered the contest there were only like 4 entries so I thought I actually had a shot of making it. And then so many beautiful things popped up in the last couple days. Darn you all! [I mean that in the nicest way my competitive spirit will allow 🙂 ]
    Both your entries are wonderful.

  8. oh my goodness! WOW!! so so cute! 🙂 plus you've given me a brilliant idea for an item I've been toying with in my head – grommets! Perfect solution!

  9. Jennifer @ Ellison Lane Quilts

It's super cute and I love your choice of fabric. Good luck! I had not heard about this contest but am off to check it out. 🙂

  10. Okay, I want one now. Your use of the buckle was genius – I thought about entering but I'm glad I didn't, given this kind of competition! Good luck!

  11. Okay, all I have to say is that if the judges don't pick this one (having not seen your other project yet), I'd say they are out of their minds! What a fantastic job you've done here – you have such a true talent.

  12. That is gorgeous! I want it. tee hee. I've been thinking of making something similar for my husband's bathroom. He's a magazine reader and they end up in a big pile on the floor. blech.

  13. Wow. I have not checked out the other entries yet, but this has to be a top contender! Lovely fabrics, and *so functional*! All my papers get messed up & go missing too! I write on bits of paper to figure out everything & end up having to redo my math cause the first paper is lost & I have to double check math! And Templates. They totally disappear. Until I find them, sliced, on the cutting mat!
    Very inspiring!

  14. Tammara, Jess and Cory

Absolutely adorable. I just bought me one of these from Avon for the exact same reason I cant find anything when I need it and it wastes so much of my sewing time. Good Luck

  15. Super cute! I love Domestic Bliss, and you used it well here! This is such a happy organizer. Also, the name of it cracks me up. 😉

  16. new to your blog 🙂 (hopped on over from ModaBakeShop) I love this organizer! I couldn't find it, here or there, did you write up instructions to this that is available for us to use? thank yoU!

    1. Hi Nicole! Welcome!

I do not currently have a tutorial available for the organizer. It ended up being an extra project because it was not the one that they accepted into the competition. It may be a bit before I can get to this because of the other MBS tutorials that I need to write up.
