Sherbet Log Cabin Quilt – Complete!

Sherbet Log Cabin Quilt

I love this quilt. I think it turned out just perfectly and is so nice to have as Caitlyn’s “big girl” quilt. She’s been sleeping with it for over a week now…we’ve made the bumpy transition to a twin size bed for her from her crib. Our lives will never be the same! lol

I made this quilt entirely from scraps. (and that scrap bin seems even more filled up than before I made this!) oh and a good part of a white jelly roll. Those things are perfect for this type of application. Plus I won that and didn’t have to pay for it either. woohoo!

I used my new machine that I won, the Janome Horizon, to quilt the whole thing together. I found a serpentine like stitch on my machine and just sewed “straight” lines down the length of the quilt. It went pretty quickly and I like how it adds just a bit of interest to the whole thing. Plus I think it is a really forgiving quilting method. Those curves allow the fabric to “bunch” a bit and really hide any less than stellar moments in your quilting.

I spent a long time making the back…probably more than I should have…but I wanted to use all fabrics from my stash. I had this idea to make the back look like a giant log cabin block. I incorporated all of the colors from the front onto the back and tried to make it look cohesive. I’m moderately pleased with the look and very pleased that it was all 1/2 yard cuts or so of fabric.

The binding was scrappy as has become my norm lately. I take the extra fabric from the back that is left after I’ve quilted the whole thing, chop it up into 2.5″ strips…sew them together and add some other scrappy strips if necessary. I love this because I am not left with any scraps from the backing this way!

A perfect, cheerful summer project that all came about because I was frustrated while paper piecing that spool block I showed you all last week. 1/8th of that little block got me so frustrated with tiny piecing that I ended up making this entire quilt instead as a “break”. lol I’ve always been a weird procrastinator that way. But in the end I’m thrilled with both and my daughter loves the quilt. You can’t ask for more than that!

  1. Just wanted to let you know that I LOVE this quilt! It has such a light and airy feel – perfect for a girl. What would I do without Google Reader? I would have hated to miss this; the back is a lovely idea too.

  2. Your quilt came out very cool! How great to use up all your scraps and have a coordinated back, I love that! Also very cool you have an almost "free" quilt from great stash/scrap fabrics 🙂

  3. The colors are fabulous and the way you put together the back is genius. I can't wait until I have scraps to do something like this (new to quilting) — on the other hand, holding onto the scraps until I have enough might drive me crazy. Oh well, yours is just the prettiest quilt ever.

  4. It's the attention to detail that you have that make your quilts so amazing. This is no exception. I got a little charge from seeing how you used all scraps and stash to complete this one so I can only imagine the buzz you got. It's definitely one to treasure. I hope it gets used so much that it wears thin in parts. 🙂

  5. I’m gathering my thoughts and fabric for a quilt for my granddaughters, and this log cabin quilt will definitely be one of them, if not both. I love it and I love how you pieced the back of the quilt.

  6. I happened to stumble across your site while googling how to create a moss chair! Your quilts are beautiful and thank you for the tips on how to make a moss chair.
