The doll quilt is finished….so you know what that means…!!! A celebration!

*The giveaway is now closed*

Woohoo! The quilt is officially complete, label and all (which is pretty darn cute if you ask me!)

Notice the little reference to Dorothy? I thought I was a genius when I came up that idea! LOL. Sometimes it’s the littlest things that make me happy. 🙂

But….that quilt is complete and it’s time celebrate Angela style! So that means a giveaway! And not just any giveaway. Why it’s the giveaway of another mini quilt. If you’ve been following along, then you know what is coming. Otherwise, catch up. 😉

We all know that there was no way that I was going to create a twin to the doll quilt, but I did promise that I would continue to give away mini quilts after the girl on a swing became so coveted. So here is the next addition to my attempts at mini quilts. I blogged about it a few days earlier, so you can go back and read more about it…but this is it:

As yet unnamed quilt…maybe I’ll let the winner decide! But this pretty peacock could soon be yours. And what do you need to do to get some entries? Well there’s a few ways.

I’m very intrigued by everyone’s reaction to my doll quilt “Where Bluebirds Fly”.

 doll quilt

I did not set out to create something that got a lot of attention. But the reality is that it did. And I’m interested in why. I would love to hear what it is about the quilt that drew you to it especially. No “it’s just pretty” answers please. This is an honest attempt to understand what people are liking in the quilting world. This is not a beg for a compliments, but rather a request for solid information. (I don’t turn down compliments though 😉 ) You can say as much as you like, but only one entry per comment on the quilt.

If you’ve done that and you still would like to have some more entries, then we’re going for some standards here.

You can blog about the giveaway on your blog and link back here.

You can add me as a link in your side bar on your blog.

You can become a follower or tell me that you are already one.

And hey, since it’s my blog and my giveaway, you can get another entry by leaving a comment telling me how cute my Caitlyn is…because I don’t ever get tired of hearing it. LOL.

So that’s it…can’t wait to hear what you all have to say and good luck to everyone. This is a random drawing so it doesn’t matter how deep your affection is for either quilt…it’s all up to the random generator!

Good luck! The giveaway is open until the end of September 6th (central time?) because that is when all the doll quilts need to be mailed out and when my other mini quilt needs to be mailed out. It’s just a good deadline for me! LOL.

PS. as always…make sure that there is a way to contact you!!

  1. Love the little mini you are giving away…

What draws me to "Where bluebirds fly" is the contrast between the 2 sides. One one you have a beautiful magical scene playing out and on the other turmoil…Kinda like a play between good and evil. It also reminds me of myself. I am one of those people that try and can usually manage to be happy in almost any situation and most think of me as a happy easy going person, but if you really know me you would find that what you see on the surface isn't always what it seems!

  2. I think your quilt got attention not just because it's visually appealing – but among quilters because it's elaborate and ambitious (and I know I would have thought twice – or three times, or maybe four – before taking it on) And it's different from many quilts/quilting projects in it's detail and sense of narrative – we tend to work in the very abstract – color, shape, contrast etc. not landscapes and story

  3. I love the whole story behind the quilt and how you depicted it on the quilt. Particularly I like the juxtaposition of traditional piecing with art piecing. Just like in your peacock with the background of squares and the bird on the top. I'm great at following patterns, but I would like to learn to be more flexible and put a little unexpected personality to my projects.

  4. I love the contrast in your quilt between the bright and dark sides. I love how the bright side is full of details, like those gorgeous mermaids, gnomes, mushrooms, and how the dark side seems to be void of details. The differences are so striking and the details keep you looking back for more.

But honestly, I think your openness about the process and inspiration behind the quilt make it the most interesting and appealing.

  5. I think your quilt is fabulous because:
    1. Color vs. black and white is striking to the eye and catches your attention, even in small icon form. It's a visual birthday cake of wonderfulness.
    2. The CRAZY amount of detail and various techniques used. Each time you look at it, you discover something new
    3. The theme. The Wizard of Oz is so well-loved and is all abount innocence, imagination, and the longing for home. Who doesn't love that story?

I could go on–it's simply an awesome quilt made all the more wonderful with the personal backstory from you. ♥ it!

  6. The quilt is so eye catching at first because of the vibrant colour. I would have been delighted to have only seen that half. Once you actually look at the quilt, the way the fabrics were used, as in the patterns within each fabric were perfect for where they were used. Lastly for me, the different quilting stitches really made the scene come to life. Lovely.

  7. Your doll quilt is not only pretty but also so interesting! There is so much going on and so many different characters to see. It is a quilt that you could "read" as a bedtime story! Aside from that the piecing/applique and all the others methods you used are amazing! I still don't know how you managed the tiny fiddly gnomes! I also loved how you used the designs of the fabrics within the picture you created.. ie the castles/mermaids. Oh and I LOVE the evil witches lol!

  8. I like how the design motif in the border echoes the motif of the feathers, but one is ordered, and the other is more scattered. Complementary colors are always pretty beautiful. The ticker tape background gives texture, BUT the peacock on top adds dimension to that, so it makes the texture on the background seem flat. A crisp white frame always scores. — and I just realized that I answered for your peacock, instead of the doll quilt. Now I'll go back and re-answer (count this one as my follower entry)

  9. RE: the doll quilt —
    – excellent contrast, while maintaining continuity with the rainbow
    – the little troubadour climbing the mountain
    – Though so many different fabrics are used, the flow is seamless.
    – it's ethereal and grounded at the same time — universal themes are universally appealing (struggle between good and evil; our longing for beauty — that kind of stuff)
    – the heart behind it.
    – exceptional attention to detail

  10. You dont need me to tell you she is cute!!! Because she is simply adorable! Plus I already have baby fever and you are not helping posting adorable pictures of your sweet Caitlyn.

As far as the quilt goes, I love the story behind it. I can so understand!!! All too well!
Plus the little details you put into it, It is truly amazing. You went above and beyond the call of duty 🙂

  11. I was drawn by the creativity of your design it is so original, I love the look at both sides of the quilt how it is so bright and cheerful on the magical side and black on white on the other. I love how you did the landscaping with the mermaids and the gnomes and the castles it is so wonderful I just love it.

Your peacock quilt is gorgous too, I have a friend who raises peacocks she has 13 or 14 of them and several are albino. They are so beautiful and so is your quilt. You do such beautiful work. Thanks for the chance to win. I am crossing my fingers for the DQS9, it is awesome.

  12. I am now a follower. I love this quilt. I liked to watch the progression of the quilt and after you told the story I could connect with it in another way. Thank you for sharing it.

  13. I think the mini quilt is very creative and unique. You used a very nice selection of yellows for the background. They don't overpower and take away from the focus of the quilt, the peacock.

  14. I think my reason I coveted your doll quilt is rather simple: I used to LOVE to swing on a swing set in my backyard, the feeling of being high up and free, the wind brushing by my ears, and seeing your quilt broke me back to that memory. Also, it's very unique and unusual. I started to make one of my own, but I'm stalled. I don't want to "copy" yours but I'm stuck on finding my own originality so it is hanging in my sewing room with just the background fabrics raw-edge appliqued and nothing else! Maybe someday…

  15. Your quilt really combined art + story + emotion + skill + wonderful color! I loved hearing you tell the meaning and seeing the emotions you had tied to this time of your life. Seeing you pour out your heart through fabric and thread is beautiful. I think that's what all creative endeavors should be. Some element of ourselves needs to be included in each thing we create — whether it's a quilt, a painting, or any other artistic endeavor. That's why I love your doll swap quilt! 🙂

  16. I also think that we should name Caitlin as "Cutest Member of the New Orleans Modern Quilt Guild." I know she doesn't quilt yet, but she plays with your fabric scraps (I assume), so that will count. Seriously, I love her hair!!! Adorable! 🙂

  17. Why I was drawn to your doll quilt? Well, I loved how it seemed to tell a story. Even before you shared the story behind it, there was that sense, with the two sides, and the 'characters' that you added to it. Also, that quilt is just eye candy. Everytime you posted a new picture of it, there were so many little details that you had added with the birds, the mermaid, the witches, the gnomes (love the gnomes!). The whole quilt is just beautiful and full of things to look at.

  18. Oh man, I love your mini's. I've been drooling over them on Flickr. 🙂

I have to add , your wee babe is just gorgeous !!!

  19. What I like about this quilt is the strong sense of a story, and the planning that has gone into it, particularly the use of fabric details as part of the storytelling- the mermaids, castles and so on. The split between the two sides suggests the strong emotional motivation behind the design. And I'm heartened to see the very faint rainbow colours shining through the bleakness to suggest enduring hope. bellgirlsblog [at] gmail [dot] com

  20. I was so intrigued when I first saw your quilt – the two different sides…one dark and gray and the other beautiful and colorful. And then you just kept adding more to make it even more magical. But the best part of all was when you told us the story behind it – just put it all into perspective and made it even more special!

  21. I like the colours in this quilt. There is a good balance of colour too and the subject is cute. Nicely executed with the stitching of the feathers and the quilting. The fabric in the border is very attractive and the pattern echoes the peacock theme, thereby drawing it all together. All in all a happy, nicely coloured, well balanced, well designed quilt that is absolutely beautiful and would be welcome on any wall!!
