Edges Blossom Pincushion

Right before I left for my vacation, I received a lovely treat in the mail.  Michael Miller had sent me some of Laura Gunn’s new line, Edges.  This line, with the exception of a few focal prints, a line of bright, saturated blender prints. I knew right away that I wanted to work with that COLOR.

I decided this week that I wasn’t quite ready to truly sew yet but I did want to play with fabric.  So I searched through some of my favorite crafting books at home and found the Blossom Pincushion from I heart Patchwork.  I’ve been meaning to make one of these for forever.

I searched a few places for that palette and was finally able to find them at Hobby Lobby at the tip of a friend.  They are the plastic version but it is still really lovely.  Plus it is inexpensive! $2!

My goal when making this, was to marry to the two ideas together, the blossom paint palette pincushion and this new line Edges.  I laid out all of the fabrics and chose a set of 6 cohesive colors that gave me a rainbow palette.  One of Laura’s Blender lines is called Painter’s Canvas and I could think of nothing more perfect than a painter’s palette filled with her fabrics.

I don’t want to give away any details of the pattern because it is part of a published book (one that is well worth owning if you don’t already!).  Suffice it to say, this pattern is PERFECT for charm squares.  I used the template and made a vellum one of my own.  I traced the circle around the back of each square I chose.

I cut out the six circles.  Don’t they look pretty together?!

Then….a couple hours later (due to some chainsaw oil on my glue gun…don’t ask) I had a lovely pincushion!

I love how the fabric looks like real paint in the palette.  Such a great blend of concepts. And that sweet center is just perfect for items like buttons.

  2. I have not allowed myself to look at fabric because we are packing to get ready to move to another state in 2 weeks, but I love, love, love "Edges." I definitely want to get some, and to win some would be wonderful! Nancy: rangerer@sbcglobal.net

  3. To be honest, there isn't just one line that I'm looking forward to, even though I won't be buying them (no fabric budget! 🙁 )! There are so many beautiful ones!!

  4. As for vacations, while I've been to many places in the US, my all time favorite place was Kauai. The warm breeze, the slower pace, the always-warm water, the green, green, GREEN surroundings…. simply breath taking!!

  5. I don't really think about vacations anymore..we retired to Mexico 3 1/2 years ago and it is still like a wonderful slow paced vacation to me.

  6. I've seen so many beautiful new lines coming out that I want them all. I get a mini panic attack everytime I try to narrow down choices to place an order. It is so hard not being able to see & feel the fabric in person.

  7. I am super excited about Natalie Lymers latest range coming out and I love your pincushion. I thought it looked good in the book but I truly love the rainbow effect you have created. Thanks so much for sharing.

  8. I love the beach in Summer and the mountains in winter. I love waking up to misty mornings with light rain all day, sitting by a fire or snuggling under a quilt and spending time with my family.

  9. I don't really know what fabric lines that are coming out, but my fav from the past is Hope Valley by Denise Schmidt. Oh I love that line!!! (But I am also hoping for a reprint of the line by Anna Maria Horner that you made your brick quilt with. That quilt was what got me hooked on quilting!)

  10. I just came home from a five day vaccation in Budapest and I think that I have a new favourite! Thermal baths, good shopping ( fabric, perle cotton thread, leather bags…) and great ice cream!!! Beautiful city as well, with a history since the romans, that built the first public bath houses!

  11. What a lovely bunch of colors! Looks like every color, beautiful! I've been on the hunt for pincushions and your's is super. I'd love to make one. Lots of great fabrics I've been in love with, Ruby, The Ghastlies and coming soon, In from the Cold from Kate Spain.
