Modern Patchwork Magazine – Travel Laundry Bag

It is a true sign of how crazy my life has been lately that I haven’t managed to share this with you all yet. But I am actually published in a second magazine that is out right now, Modern Patchwork by Interweave Press.

Now part of the delay was because my copies of the magazine were originally sent to New Orleans…yeah…I’ve been gone for a year now…but databases take a while to get updated. So I didn’t even see the magazine until a week or so ago. Actually I went to Barnes and Noble on the day we moved to get a little break and to check out my project in the magazine. I wanted to see how it looked! lol

Travel Laundry Bag

I had this idea for a travel laundry bag because I needed one! Necessity is the mother of invention right? And what better fabric is there for this kind of project than Heather Ross’ Laundry Line fabric?! Perfection! (Can you tell I was pleased with my choice?)

Travel Laundry Bag

I paired it with my absolute favorite stripe by Jennifer Paganelli and threw in some Sweetwater Canvas on the bottom and the strap. The bag has a double cord stop opening for easy closure and mesh fabric to help that laundry breathe! Plus the handy strap lets you hang your bag on anything you can find in your hotel room or home away from home while you fill it up.

I used a combination of french seams and packaged bias tape to make sure that every seam was perfectly covered and finished. This bag is as pretty on the inside as it is on the outside!

It’s ALMOST too pretty to put dirty laundry in it. But never fear…it’s completely functional and I think it would make doing that laundry at the end of the trip a treat…because it’s all coming out of this adorable bag. It is definitely big enough to hold a couple of days worth of laundry for sure… sadly I have not taken a trip since making this bag and have not been able to try out it’s full capacity. 😉 But I will!

So if you want to make one of your own, pick up a copy of Modern Patchwork. I personally think this is the perfect gift for someone who truly has everything. I bet they don’t have a custom travel laundry bag.

  1. Oh, goodness – that Heather Ross print is perfection for this!!! I love all your work, Angela! Thank you for sharing it with us 🙂

  2. Lovely work! I almost never buy quilting mags but I may have to find a copy of this one.

I like to dream about travelling more than I do, so being prepared helps me believe I'll do it sooner rather than later. 🙂

  3. Your right! I can't think of anyone with a custom laundry bag! I love this pattern, and when I saw it in the magazine, it was one of my favorite projects in there. And I'm not just saying that because I like you:)

  4. Darnit… I was doing so good at not picking this magazine up at the book store. I stopped myself at 3 different place. 😐 Now I won't be able to next time I see it on the shelf. I officially NEED this magazine. :p

  5. I saw that yesterday! I was in Barnes and Noble and I showed my friend, "Hey! I know the lady who made this!!!" And he looked over half interested, "uh huh" and went back to his stupid photography mag. But I saw it! It turned out great!

  6. I have not seen the magazine here in Victoria, but will keep an eye out for it. This is a great bag for trips. My DH and I share one that I made. This would be great for a Father's Day gift. His very own! I love to share, but he needs his very own. Judith, Texas

  7. Much better than the calico bag currently used. Haven't seen this mag in Australia. Angela is it USA or UK or Europe published….now that Borders is closed down don't have access to all/any interesting publications. Thanks for your creativity and congratulations on being published,

    1. I think if you follow the link I provided, it gives you the opportunity to purchase the magazine yourself. Let me know if that doesn't work and I will try to find out a better route!

  8. Adorable bag! I think I have to make one! Right now we just use old grocery bags or a garbage bag. Something cuter is a must!

    Congrats on being published!

  9. Hi Angela, I finally got the magazine and the first thing I'm sewing is your laundry bag, of course 🙂 I'll have 3 of them, one for each member of a family, as we do long trips 🙂
But I need your help. Is it just me who doesn't see it or is there a step for sewing a handle missing in the directions?

    1. Hi Katarina,
you didn't leave an email address where I can contact you, so I hope that you see this.

It does indeed look like that step was left out. The dimensions for the handle strap are given. So take that piece, fold it in half along the length, wrong sides together. Open the piece and fold each long edge to the center crease you just made. Stitch along each long side of the folded piece.

Now use that piece for your handle and attach it to the "back" of the bag top, centering it around the seam. Place the strap about 1 1/2" away from the seam on either side with raw edges aligned and the strap against the mesh. Tack this in place BEFORE you start adding on the striped casing fabric. AKA between steps 10 and 11.

Then follow the pattern as written. As you sew on the casing, the strap will just be included and you can sort of forget it is there. 😉

      I hope this helps!

    2. Thank you very much Angela! I'm sorry for the email address I thought you could find it in my google profile. As I'm quite impatient I finished the first bag as I thought it was done..the handle comes from inside so it' s not good but I'll do it better for the two others 🙂 Anyway, the bag is great and my husband is happy that I finally made something useful for our family 🙂
