Quiltmaker 100 Blocks – vol 5!

Today I’m happy to share that I have a block in Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks – Volume 5!

You’ve got to look for me in there…I’m all the way near the end.  lol  But I’m in there! #92 or 94 or something.

Quiltmaker 100 Blocks - vol 5!

I broke into my Mendocino stash to create this pretty mermaid block paired with some Farmdale Blossoms and a Riley Blake dot. Oh I just love all of these fabrics together!! I really tried to get the mermaids to have some movement and feel like they were swimming in the strips.

The fabrics are the showcase in the block I put in the magazine, but I simplified the look by evening out the borders and creating each block in a just two tones.

The technique to make the blocks is just the same as the one show in Quiltmaker…but even easier with only the one print to worry about. And I LOVE the secondary pattern that shows up when you pair multiple blocks together. I have about 6 or so of these blocks made and I need to make more! This is a quilt that needs to happen in my world.

Patterns that read as solid like or monochromatic are perfect this kind of layout. Just solids would be amazing too. You get a great texture from the seams but it is still simple and very usable. Mitered and on pointe?! Perfect!  Oh and this geometric pattern is very male friendly.  I know we are all always on the lookout for a pattern the men in our lives would like….errr…tolerate….err…love!

  1. I am newer to sewing and unemployed, so I have a mainly nonexistent stash, but I am always keeping my eye out for nice prints. I love when bloggers post what fabric they are using!

  2. I really like your block. I can see this block as a great scrap stashbuster. I'm so into scrap quilts these days. I would be hard pressed to name 1 favorite fabric or designer. I'm partial to Northcott, Moda, Red Rooster, Blank, Clothworks, see what I mean? Too many fabrics, so little time. Thanks for a chance to win the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks and congrats for being chosen to be in it.

  3. This is a GREAT block – one of the first I can REALLY REALLY see myself making!!!! I can't wait to get my hands on this issue!!! Fabric lines? nothing in particular – I buy what jumps out at me usually regardless of the line – but I am pulled to orange in nearly any shade. Love my orange.

  4. What a great block. It will make an amazing quilt. I love all the different fabrics that you used. I don't have a specific line that is my favorite but I do like batiks.

  5. Wow, this is a block that looks really simple, but put a bunch together side by side and they create fun secondary patterns! You're right….this is such a versatile pattern for so many fabrics!
Personally, I love blenders (like the "Blenders" I can get at Walmart, or the Quilter's Candy Mirage you can get at ConnectingThreads.com)…the type that are tone-on-tone, not quite solids that create a tiny hint of texture and add interest. They create a place for your eye to relax a bit if mixed with patterned prints, but are not boring. And new fabrics I'm now in love with….I'm coming to appreciate batiks! I really want to make a quilt with batiks now!!! After the QM blog tour of yesterday, I have fallen in love with Holly Taylor's batiks from Moda. Pretty and subtle colors in nature prints. awwww, comforting and fun.

  6. I'm not a 'line' lover…there'll be one fabric I like, maybe two, and then it's a matter of which solids I can pair it with. Lots of love for Valori Wells' Wrenly Wildfield, though. I have it in the red-pink and in the blue-green colourways.

  7. I'm loving Vintage Modern at the moment, especially the larger florals in it; must have yardage in that when it's released. I do have charm pack though.

  8. I always seem to find kaufman on the selvedges of the fabric selections that follow me home on impulse. 😉 Sometimes I go to the store determined to get a "color" I'm short of. Congrats on being in the 100 block mag…back of the book is where I ALWAYS start reading 🙂

  9. Believe it or not, I actually don't have any fabric collections on my must have list right now. That's really hard for even ME to believe! I was shopping with Fabric.com the other day, trying to get to my $35 so I could get free shipping, and was having a hard time trying to figure out what to put in the cart! But, Spring market is right around the corner and I have been seriously drooling over the sneak peeks I've been seeing of Tula Pink's new collection. I am a HUGE Tula fan and can't wait to get my hands on the new stuff!

  10. My favorite fabric line in "ON SALE". Never can make up my mind so I usually stick to the sale fabrics. Love your block–especially when you put several together. Makes a really neat design. Something I would make.

  11. I really like simple, not complex blocks and this one fits that bill perfectly! I'm liking several collections at the moment: "Apple of My Eye", "Flock", "Summersville", and "Cocoon".

  12. My current fave fabric is Leesa Chandler's "Passage to India," for Hoffman. I'm still waiting on some backordered peacock desgn, I don't think I will get it. Probably sold out. But, I do have yardage of 3 other of the designs.

Your block is striking. Congrats on making the magazine.

  13. I'm loving Michael Miller's Ta Dot – I love dots so much! Might be perfect for making this block — I absolutely love these and am adding them to my "to make" list!

  14. I'm so glad you made a pattern for this block, and congrats on getting published again! You are seriously a rock star!

My current favorite is Children at Play by Sarah Jane. I finally have all the prints after much swapping (OK, and a little buying!) and I'm going to add in some matching solids to make two Apple Core quilts–one girl and one boy! I only have a gazillion other projects to finish up before I'm allowed to start something new, but it WILL happen…someday! 🙂

  15. Love your block. So many cool blocks in that magazine, I must pick one up.
My current favorite is Salt Air by Cosmo Cricket. It just feels so summery. Sooo looking forward to inhaling some actual salt air this summer.

  16. I love your blocks! That Farmdale print is gorgeous, I'd never seen it before. I'm not going to be much use with the fabric question as we're always months behind in the UK, I'm still loving Ruby at the moment.

  17. Wow Angela, that is certainly a fabulous block! Gosh, I have so many favourite fabrics, but I really like Primitive, Civil War designs. One of my faves is "Little Gatherings".
Thanks for the chance at the give-away.

  18. That's a GREAT block Angela, and translate so well as a quilt. I'm a bit out of the loop on the new fabrics but to be boring, Echo has sprung to mind for me too, it's my latest buy anyhow.

  19. Love your block – it's so versatile! I would love to see it made up on Timeless Treasures Gumdrop Tonga Batik line – it's so bright and lively!!!

  20. Cool Block! 🙂 Love the dark blue one the best! My favorite fabric right now is Parson Gray's Curious Lines! 🙂 Thanks for a chance to win! 🙂

  21. Congrats on having a block in the magazine. Your block is beautiful in all the colors. I don't really have a favorite fabric line but if i had to pick one, it would probably be Moda.

  22. I Love your Quilt Block! And the Mermaid Fabric is Adorable! My current Favorite Fabric Line is by Jessica Jones called Outside Oslo….

  23. Your block is amazing. I love that there is a secondary design as well when all put together. Congratulations on being included in Quiltmaker's 100 this year. For fabric I love anything Kate Spain does. I'm also loving Vintage Modern.

Thank you for a great giveaway and a chance to win.

  24. It's not like I own the fabric I love.. but I just can't stop dreaming about Commute by Jay-Cyn Designs. And the cherry on top is that it's organic too. Why must my lack of money taunt me so!!!!?

  25. Just love the impact white has when joined together so looking forward to the finished product. Oh, by the way, like the block which made it possible.

Cuzco from Kate Spain and if I could add another Moda, Tapestry from FigTree.
Two different designs and colorways. Just love color.

  26. I've been using lots of solids lately – maybe it's the Modern Quilt movement. This would be a great use of my stash. Glad you're in the magazine. Better late than never. Kathie L in Allentown

  27. A current favorite fabric line is Lotta Jansdotter's Echo. I love your block, BTW, done up in the Mendocino fabric. It's absolutely beautiful and so like my style! Thanks for the chance at this giveaway!

  28. Lovely block, and it's great to see how a little variation changes the look.
I'm currently tempted by Mama Said Sew (by Sweetwater).

  29. I love your block:) I'm not sure I could match all the seams as perfectly as you did, even with the lines in the fabric print 🙂 Congrats on your new house! Nothing like doing a little sewing to make it feel like home! In honor of firing up the air conditioning this week (yikes, I know, right?), I have been sewing with Kate Spain's 12 Days of Christmas. Makes me feel like I'm working ahead…and thinking of cooler weather helps me from setting the a/c on the Siberia setting.

  30. Beautiful blocks – they look so complicated even though they seem fairly straight-forward. Love the different effects you can get with it!

I'm currently waiting for V&Co for Moda's Simply Color. There are ombre jelly rolls and I'm dying to get my hands on some. Thanks!

  31. I haven't signed up to win this mag on other blogs because I hadn't rally seen anything that I was taken by…until now! sign me up to win! My fav line right now is by Marcia Derse. OH, this would be a stunning block with her fabrics…
