I love this quilt. I think it turned out just perfectly and is so nice to have as Caitlyn’s “big girl” quilt. She’s been sleeping with it for over a week now…we’ve made the bumpy transition to a twin size bed for her from her crib. Our lives will never be the same! lol
I made this quilt entirely from scraps. (and that scrap bin seems even more filled up than before I made this!) oh and a good part of a white jelly roll. Those things are perfect for this type of application. Plus I won that and didn’t have to pay for it either. woohoo!
I used my new machine that I won, the Janome Horizon, to quilt the whole thing together. I found a serpentine like stitch on my machine and just sewed “straight” lines down the length of the quilt. It went pretty quickly and I like how it adds just a bit of interest to the whole thing. Plus I think it is a really forgiving quilting method. Those curves allow the fabric to “bunch” a bit and really hide any less than stellar moments in your quilting.
I spent a long time making the back…probably more than I should have…but I wanted to use all fabrics from my stash. I had this idea to make the back look like a giant log cabin block. I incorporated all of the colors from the front onto the back and tried to make it look cohesive. I’m moderately pleased with the look and very pleased that it was all 1/2 yard cuts or so of fabric.
The binding was scrappy as has become my norm lately. I take the extra fabric from the back that is left after I’ve quilted the whole thing, chop it up into 2.5″ strips…sew them together and add some other scrappy strips if necessary. I love this because I am not left with any scraps from the backing this way!
A perfect, cheerful summer project that all came about because I was frustrated while paper piecing that spool block I showed you all last week. 1/8th of that little block got me so frustrated with tiny piecing that I ended up making this entire quilt instead as a “break”. lol I’ve always been a weird procrastinator that way. But in the end I’m thrilled with both and my daughter loves the quilt. You can’t ask for more than that!
What a fun quilt.

Just wanted to let you know that I LOVE this quilt! It has such a light and airy feel – perfect for a girl. What would I do without Google Reader? I would have hated to miss this; the back is a lovely idea too.
Awesome! I love how it can be reversible. I hope things get easier with the big girl bed too!
So pretty, I love the big log cabin back!
You won a Horizon?!? – awesome! This is such a great quilt – front and back!
so beautiful! I am sure she will treasure it
As soon as I saw the first picture I said OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh out loud!! It is gorgeous.

Wow! You did such a great job with this! I absolutely love it!
Great quilt! Lucky Caitlyn!
It's so sweet! I love that it's perfect for your little girl right now, but it will also be just right as she gets older!
Oh it's absolutely gorgeous, love those colours!
PS, hope you're not hung over ;o)
beautiful! very cool
But I think the back looks great! Totally worth the time from here. But, that's easy for me to say =)
Cute Angela! I love how you did the back!
Beautiful, great fabric and I love the back.
LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! Log cabins are SO perfect for scrap busting!! …but you are right, they seem to breed!!!
ps- the back ROCKS!!
pps- the other thing I HATE about using the scraps is the HUGE mess it makes :p …but that is probably only ME that gets SO messy ;D
It's beautiful Angela!
What a perfect quilt for your little girl! I just love everything about it! Gorgeous!
This quilt looks yummy enough to eat! So pretty!!
Darling, Angela. I absolutely love it. Funny how the things that come together without a plan that sometimes end up being the ones you love the most. 🙂
Your quilt came out very cool! How great to use up all your scraps and have a coordinated back, I love that! Also very cool you have an almost "free" quilt from great stash/scrap fabrics 🙂
Beautiful!!! I love it!!!!
The colors are fabulous and the way you put together the back is genius. I can't wait until I have scraps to do something like this (new to quilting) — on the other hand, holding onto the scraps until I have enough might drive me crazy. Oh well, yours is just the prettiest quilt ever.
Fantastic quilt and quilting a combination of scraps and a new machine. Love it.
I love it!
I like this kind of pattern, and your colors are perfect to me!
I would love to make one beautiful as yours =) maybe some day…
Just beautiful! Love the fun summery colors!
I really like it. thanks for sharing
Very sweet!
Beautiful! I love the colors – so summery!
WOW! I love this quilt! I am amazed at the backing especially but I also really love the quilting stitch design. It is bright and summery!
It's beautiful, Angela! I can see why you and your daughter love the quilt. And what a nice bonus to use up your scraps.
It's the attention to detail that you have that make your quilts so amazing. This is no exception. I got a little charge from seeing how you used all scraps and stash to complete this one so I can only imagine the buzz you got. It's definitely one to treasure. I hope it gets used so much that it wears thin in parts. 🙂
Just wonderful! Home-made goodness from scraps, what could be better! Congrats on a fine finish 🙂
