Edges Blossom Pincushion

Right before I left for my vacation, I received a lovely treat in the mail.  Michael Miller had sent me some of Laura Gunn’s new line, Edges.  This line, with the exception of a few focal prints, a line of bright, saturated blender prints. I knew right away that I wanted to work with that COLOR.

I decided this week that I wasn’t quite ready to truly sew yet but I did want to play with fabric.  So I searched through some of my favorite crafting books at home and found the Blossom Pincushion from I heart Patchwork.  I’ve been meaning to make one of these for forever.

I searched a few places for that palette and was finally able to find them at Hobby Lobby at the tip of a friend.  They are the plastic version but it is still really lovely.  Plus it is inexpensive! $2!

My goal when making this, was to marry to the two ideas together, the blossom paint palette pincushion and this new line Edges.  I laid out all of the fabrics and chose a set of 6 cohesive colors that gave me a rainbow palette.  One of Laura’s Blender lines is called Painter’s Canvas and I could think of nothing more perfect than a painter’s palette filled with her fabrics.

I don’t want to give away any details of the pattern because it is part of a published book (one that is well worth owning if you don’t already!).  Suffice it to say, this pattern is PERFECT for charm squares.  I used the template and made a vellum one of my own.  I traced the circle around the back of each square I chose.

I cut out the six circles.  Don’t they look pretty together?!

Then….a couple hours later (due to some chainsaw oil on my glue gun…don’t ask) I had a lovely pincushion!

I love how the fabric looks like real paint in the palette.  Such a great blend of concepts. And that sweet center is just perfect for items like buttons.

  1. Thank you for a great give away! I'm fan of Michael Miller, most fun fabrics are from them! One of my latest favourites is also Heaven & Helsinki.

  2. I am drooling over that edges line. Gorgeous colors! I used to love to vacation in Florida, now I live there, so the mountains call my name every summer.

  3. I'm really excited for THIS collection I love colors and patterns but I usually want the ones that are too geometrical and detract from the quilt, these will be really nice for my next adventure!

  4. I'm looking forward to Bijoux, which IS out not at my favorite store I guess, but I'm pretending its not because I already made two fabric orders last week…

  5. Thank you so much for the giveaway, I'll be getting some of this line, I think my husband would prefer it over my normal choices.

My favorite place to vacation is Disneyland, its close, it keeps my husband happy and I get the best inexpensive carnitas ever just down the street! (I DO let food sway my choice of vacation spots after all!)

  6. I love Heather Ross' fabrics. And I have a stack of those blossoms, but, of course, they're pretty sad because they're still empty and still all white in color with no pretties nestled inside!

  7. I love the new Kaffe Fassetet shot cottons. They are so luscious and mix well with many different fabrics outside of his collection.

Thanks for the chance to win, these fabrics are great and could also mix well.

  8. My favorite place to vacation is going to the ocean.. it is so rejuvenating for me. Just time to listen to the waves, walk along the sand, feel the wind, remember to be just a speck in the bigger picture. At the ocean, I am reminded not to take myself and life so seriously.

  10. My favorite place to vacation is — get ready — this motel (with an M) in Daytona Beach (for realz) where my family has been staying since the 50s (long before I was born). I can't help it; it is my past and I love it.

  11. I'm looking forward to Briar Patch by Heather Ross. I love the strawberry fabrics!

  12. I look forward to making my own fabric line someday! Big dreams but I have had bigger dreams that have come true in my live already and I do believe someday I will achieve everything I set out to do.

  13. What a sweet pincushion, I love the colors you chose. I love all the colors in that collection of fabric. The collection that I am patiently waiting for right now is Road 15 by Sweetwater and…I have pre-ordered Briar Rose by Heather Ross and can't wait for it to be in my mailbox.

  14. Our favorite place to vacation would probably be New Zealand. The country and the people are beautiful. They are so friendly and have wonderful climate, food and lots of gorgeous water. Really is a paradise.
